Engineering

The course allows students to concentrate on an area of engineering which they have previously explored at undergraduate level, through an in-depth research project. This course can be taken on its own or as a preparation for a PhD. The MRes is a free-standing qualification.

Entry requirements

A 1st or upper 2nd Class Honours engineering degree in field relevant to the applicant's chosen research topic.

Course modules

The MRes consists of 2 semesters. In the 1st semester, students study 4 taught modules: 1 on professional research skills, 1 on the MATLAB and CAD software, and 2 appropriate optional modules from those offered for our range of MScs, including: advanced fluid dynamics; advanced solid mechanics; electrical machines and drives; high reliability embedded systems; modelling and classification of data; radio systems; robust control; understanding surfaces in engineering.

Assessment methods

The taught modules are delivered through a mixture of lectures and tutorials. For the MRes project, students provide: formal proposal and literature review (February); presentation and interim report (after Easter); draft dissertation (start of August); final dissertation (end of August); Viva (September); students are also expected to attend supervision meetings throughout their project.
