Advanced Materials Engineering

The aims for the course are to: gain broad knowledge of the properties, processing, characterisation, design and selection of materials for transportation, energy and aerospace applications; obtain board knowledge of computer aided engineering design and mathematical modelling of processes to engineering materials with advanced properties; develop a thorough understanding of the relationship between processing, structure and mechanical properties of major classes of advanced engineering materials; develop the organisational, practical and computational skills necessary to carry out research in advanced materials engineering; experience individual research project work for materials used in transport, energy and aerospace industry; enable students to propose, plan, conduct research and report research outcomes in the areas related to materials processing, characterisation and failure analysis, component life prediction; secure knowledge and research skills so that students are able to take their studies further to do a PhD, in case they complete the full MSc Course modules.

Entry requirements

A 1st or good 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant subject or a qualification recognised by the University as equivalent.

Course modules

MATLAB and CAD; advanced fluid dynamics; advanced solid mechanics; individual project; computational fluid dynamics; advanced materials modelling; aerospace materials; dynamics of mechanical systems. Plus 1 option module from: current trends in aerospace; modelling and classification of data; systems engineering and spacecraft systems; understanding surfaces in engineering.

Assessment methods

Performance in modules is assessed by means of open and closed examination papers and a range of continuously assessed work. All MSc students are required to produce a dissertation including the results obtained in the individual project module.
