The flexibility of the MRes in Geography allows students to develop their domain knowledge and research skills under the direct supervision of a member of staff. The relationship between staff and student is more direct than that under traditional MSc supervision. Each student takes 40 taught credits from existing modules and the dissertation component of the MRes allows the student to develop and explore a deep understanding of their topic. It is expected that the MRes will result in publications. The MRes is an ideal basis for pursuing a research career through a PhD.
Students are normally required to have at least an upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in an environment related or a science subject. Appropriate industrial or professional experience can be considered as an equivalent entry qualification on a case-by-case basis.
Dissertation; plus 2 option modules from: introduction to GIS; programming for spatial scientist; spatial information science; research design and methods in geography; geographical visualisation; earth observation and remote sensing; environment, space and society; global climate and environmental change; environmental economics; theories, concepts and applications of sustainable development; sustainable management of biological resources; spaces of social change; living with environmental change; ecological and environmental assessment; critical resource geography.
The 40 taught credits are delivered by a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, self-paced learning, directed reading and practicals. Assessment of taught modules is by a mix of coursework and examination. The MRes thesis is assessed separately.
