University of Leicester
The overall aim of the programme is to provide further in-depth knowledge into areas of mathematics previously explored at undergraduate level, with an emphasis in pure mathematics. Each student takes taught credits from existing modules in the department, followed by a large project module. This project component of the MRes allows the student to develop and explore a deep understanding of their topic. The flexibility of the MRes allows students to develop their domain knowledge and research skills under the direct supervision of a member of staff. It is expected that the MRes could result in publications. Furthermore, it aims to equip students with the research skills needed for advanced mathematical research at doctoral level.
Applicants will normally be expected to have achieved an Honours degree in a Mathematics based subject to the level of 2:1 or equivalent. Appropriate professional experience can be considered as an equivalent entry qualification on a case-by-case basis.
Core module: advanced readings in mathematics. Optional modules are subject to availability each year, and are tailored towards the topic area of students' research projects.
Assessment of taught modules is by a mix of coursework and examination. The MRes project is assessed separately by means of presentations and a written project.
