Applied Criminology

This programme combines the theoretical analysis of criminology with a practical placement. Campus-based modules will cover the key issues in contemporary criminology. Each student's placement will allow them to apply their knowledge and gain valuable experience and insight in a supervised practical setting of their choosing within the criminal justice sector. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system and develop their critical awareness of historical debates, theories and research in criminology. Students will also examine the current political, economic and social context of relevant debates on crime in the UK and abroad.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree in relevant subject or approved professional qualifications.

Course modules

Core modules: understanding crime; criminological research methods; 4 week practice placement; dissertation. Plus 3 option modules from a wide range.

Assessment methods

Students will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars where they will have the opportunity to discuss and clarify ideas with lecturers and fellow students. Some modules will also involve practical skills workshops. The degree is assessed entirely by coursework, including essays, short written assessments, research tasks, placement reports and oral presentations. Students will also complete a dissertation of up to 15,000 words.
