Terrorism, Security and Policing

Students study the key issues surrounding managing risk and security, policing and terrorism with a focus on global issues and their impact at the local level, particularly in a post '9/11' and '7/7' world; students explore the idea of terror as a concept, the history of terrorism and investigate the common myths associated with contemporary terrorism; students learn how to critically appraise research as well as conduct and write up students own independent study on a topic of their choice.

Entry requirements

At least a 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent professional qualification; applicants with relevant work experience and knowledge considered on an individual basis.

Course modules

Core modules: understanding terrorism; global security and policing; criminological research methods; dissertation; optional modules: crime, justice and psychology; responding to terrorism; media and crime; racism, crime and disorder; sexual violence; risk management; drugs and crime; transnational policing; surveillance and society; psychology of evil; current issues in forensic science and justice.

Assessment methods

Each course is based on continuous assessment comprising a written assignment of 4,000 words for each module studied; some option modules have a presentation component. A 20,000-word dissertation must also be successfully completed to achieve the MSc degree.
