University of Leicester
Global Environmental Change
Students develop a broad understanding of the causes and impacts of environmental and climate change and awareness of a range of mitigation and adaptation options. Students develop in-depth expertise in the area of their MSc thesis. Specialists in this area are increasingly sought by the private sector, international non-governmental organisations, the UN and government departments. The MSc can also be an ideal basis for pursuing a research career through a PhD.
Students are normally required to have at least a lower 2nd Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an environment related or a science subject; upper 2nd Class and 1st Class students are preferred; appropriate industrial or professional experience can be considered as an equivalent entry qualification on a case-by-case basis.
Course modules: Global climate and environmental change; the changing water cycle; MSc dissertation; either research design and methods in geography; or GIS methods in the field; plus 4 option modules from: Earth observation and remote sensing; introduction to geographical information science; programming for spatial scientists; living with environmental change; environmental economics; water quality processes and management; sustainable management of biological resources: ecosystem and biodiversity conservation; ecological and environmental assessment; biodiversity conservation and global change: tropical east Africa (the additional cost of this optional field-based module is not included in the course fee.)
Teaching is by a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, self-paced learning, directed reading and practicals. Assessment of taught modules is by a mix of coursework and examination. The MSc thesis is assessed separately.
