Psychodynamic Counselling

Students prepare for clinical practice through year 1 in skills training groups; during this year, students are encouraged to enhance their skills by seeking a placement with a relevant voluntary sector agency; students start their formal placement at the beginning of the 2nd year and their clinical work is supervised in weekly sessions of 90 minutes, usually in groups of 3; students can see up to 3 clients a week in year 2; this can be increased in year 3 subject to negotiation between the supervisor, the student and the agency; there is no personal development group in year 3.

Entry requirements

For PgDip: degree in relevant subject (psychology; sociology; medicine; social studies) or equivalent professional qualification (nursing; social work; youth and community work); minimum 50 hours' previous counselling training; minimum age 23 years or over; minimum 2 years' relevant work experience; for MA: successful completion of PgDip.

Course modules

Year 1: psychodynamic theory and skills; the therapeutic relationship; the therapeutic frame and therapy process; counselling in context and skills; introduction to research methods; personal development groups. Year 2: mental health in context; assessment, ethics and contracts; evidence based practice, models and interventions; research methods; supervision and placement; personal development groups. Year 3: supervision and placement; research dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is continuous, through written work, classroom based assignment, supervision and attendance in personal development group; there are skills groups and clinical supervision groups in year 2 and a counselling placement required from start of year 2; there is a also a requirement to complete 120 hours of counselling practice; MA: 3rd research-based year leads to submission of 20,000-word dissertation.
