Media, Culture and Society

Students explore developments in the disciplinary fields of media, communication and sociology, and how we understand our social and political world through the study of culture in all its forms. The course develops students' critical and analytical skills and gives them a solid grounding in research methods and current theories, and help students apply them to their own areas of research.

Entry requirements

Requires 2.1 or better in media/communication studies; politics; sociology; social, cultural or political theory; cultural studies. If the applicant's degree is in a different, but related field, they may also be considered at the discretion of the Department.

Course modules

Core modules: approaches to media, communication and culture; social and cultural theory; dissertation. Optional modules: the cultural industries: theory, policy and practice; mediating crisis; language and media; gender politics in contemporary media; studying film; humanitarianism, ethics and the media; advanced principles of audience research; critical game studies; the social/cultural construction of science, health and the environment; reporting war and security post 9/11; technology, culture and communication; new communication technologies, social media and digital politics.

Assessment methods

Teaching is by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Assessment is by means of essays, online assignments and a dissertation of approximately 14,000 words.
