The course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); students spend 24 out of 36 weeks in school placements; the course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); students spend 24 out of 36 weeks in school placements; taught sessions, tutorial, online and in-school support ensures that, as a creative teacher, students can facilitate their own students' development as fully literate young adults who can understand, engage with and create a multiplicity of texts both within and beyond the classroom; students have taught sessions and in-school mentoring from some of the best practitioners in the field, and with their support, students learn how to become an effective practitioner themselves; the programme cover all areas of the National Curriculum for English; the course also address preparation for public examinations across the 16-19 age range and Key Stage 3 school-based assessments.

Entry requirements

Degree (2.1 or above preferred) with at least 50 per cent of content in subject specialism; GCSE English and mathematics grade C or above, or equivalent; interview.

Course modules

Core modules: Teacher development course: reflective practice; career development; professional values; optional modules: using your voice effectively; understanding autism; teaching sport; classroom management; preparing for an interview; 2 secondary teaching placements; English subject specialism: reading; writing; speaking and listening; planning and using curriculum documentation; poetry; media in the National Curriculum; teaching Shakespeare; drama and citizenship; Key Stage 4 literacy and language teaching; post-16 A-level English, media and International Baccalaureate courses; assessment; inclusive practices; the teacher as writer; learning outside the classroom; the English only route students have an additional GCSE drama session; students have sessions on A-level communication and culture and GCSE and A-level film studies.

Continuous assessment is used throughout the course and there are no examinations.
