Secondary Education (Chemistry with Core Science)

The course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); students spend 24 out of 36 weeks in school placements; the aims of the course: introduce students to current theories and practice in science teaching and integrate these with the PGCE Teacher Development Course; help develop student�s academic and critical thinking skills to bring about effective science teaching and learning in schools; help students to understand the qualities of a good science teacher; help the student to understand what contribution science education can make to the wider education of young people.

Entry requirements

Degree (2.1 or above preferred) with at least 50 per cent of content in subject specialism; GCSE English and mathematics grade C or above, or equivalent; interview.

Course modules

Teacher development course: reflective practice; career development; professional values; options: using your voice effectively; understanding autism; teaching sport; classroom management; preparing for an interview; 2 school placements; formulae, equations and amounts of substance; atomic structure; bonding and structure; energetics; kinetics; equilibria; inorganic and organic chemistry and the periodic table.

Assessment methods

Continuous assessment is used throughout the course and there are no examinations.
