Primary Education (Lower Primary, 3-7)

The course enables students to achieve the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and to continually develop their teaching throughout their future careers by fostering a strong ethos of reflective practice; for most of the year upper primary and lower primary students are taught together, but with a separate strand of the course running for lower primary students to prepare them for teaching in the foundation stage; students are able to opt for a specialist area of study from a range of options presented early in the course; 18 weeks spent in schools.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree or equivalent; GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in mathematics, English language and a science subject; relevant GCE A-level (or equivalent); other relevant professional qualifications or experience in chosen subject specialism; interview.

Course modules

Professional studies strand: pedagogical understanding and wider professional context; Curriculum strand: mathematics and English and full range of the primary National Curriculum; Specialist studies strand: drama strategies for literacy and cross-curricular work; French; English (cross-curricular issues); history; information communication technology (ICT); learning, teaching and inclusion; mathematics; science and knowledge and understanding of the world; sustainable schools and citizenship education; school placements: all students undertake 3 block teaching placements in 3 different schools, and also visit different schools as part of a series of focus days studying specific subject and professional topics in an intensive school-based context, lower primary 3-7 students work in Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage settings.

Assessment methods

All specialist studies contribute to 1 of 2 formally assessed written assignments which normally lead to 60 credits at Master's level; in addition students are assessed against the Teacher Agency's professional standards for Qualified Teacher Status.
