Secondary Education (Citizenship Education)

The course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); students spend 24 out of 36 weeks in school placements; citizenship has been a compulsory element of the National Curriculum since 2002 in recognition of its invaluable contribution to young people's education; recent debate over content, aims and methodology by education specialists has lead to the rapid growth of the subject and consequently, a high demand for citizenship education specialists; students learn from some of the best practitioners in the field, and with their support, students learn how to become an effective practitioner themselves; the programme covers all areas of the National Curriculum for citizenship, and also addresses national testing, extra curricular learning opportunities and how to enhance the student�s own professional development.

Entry requirements

Degree (2.1 or above preferred) with at least 50 per cent of content in subject specialism; GCSE English and mathematics grade C or above, or equivalent; interview.

Course modules

Teacher development course: reflective practice; career development; professional values; options: using your voice effectively; understanding autism; teaching sport; classroom management; preparing for an interview; 2 secondary teaching placements; Citizenship subject specialism: the exploration of the political, social and psychological aspects of citizenship; the meaning of citizenship education; the possibilities, opportunities and limitations in the implementation of the citizenship curriculum; the concept of identity; multiculturalism and intercultural education; human rights and human rights education; diversity and social cohesion democracy and democratic education; global education; education for sustainable development; the ways in which citizenship education can be taught across the curriculum; assessment in citizenship education.

Assessment methods

Continuous assessment is used throughout the course and there are no examinations.
