Learning and Teaching
The MA in Education: Teaching and Learning programme (MAE:LT) offers practising teachers a wealth of opportunities to learn from both peers and expert practitioners in a supportive but academically rigorous environment. Students engage with recent academic research and develop the critical, analytical and reflective skills essential to any teacher, whilst exploring contemporary government policy, curriculum and classroom-based issues. Our tutors are all established scholars and/ or practitioners in their fields, and offer their expertise at whole group and individual level, with tutorial support built into every module.
At least a 2.2 Honours degree or its equivalent, and qualified teacher status or suitable experience in an educational setting.
In year 1 and year 2, students can select any 2 modules from those offered: action research; current issues for early career teachers; dyslexia 1: specific learning difficulties; dyslexia 2: specialist assessment and teaching of pupils with specific learning difficulties; issues in English education; issues in science education; learning technologies; lesson study; mentoring and coaching; promoting language development; SEBDA 1: understanding and managing children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; SEBDA 2: mental health problems and children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; teaching mathematics.
Assessment for year 1 and year 2 uses a variety of methods, depending on the course taken. These might, for example, include a reflective journal, a short presentation about a pupils learning, an essay and a study undertaken in the place of work. In the 3rd year, instead of a traditional dissertation, students join the Professional Enquiry course. This begins with taught sessions on research methods to provide students with the background they need for a study undertaken in their own school or setting. We will help students to decide upon a topic for their enquiry, and provide students with specialist support.
