Contemporary Sociology

This programme provides students with an up-to-date, advanced training in sociology, focusing in particular on contemporary theories, themes and debates. There are opportunities to specialise in particular areas of sociology.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant social science subject, but under certain circumstances, other qualifications may be recognised.

Course modules

Core modules: issues in contemporary society; research in context 1; debates in contemporary sociology; research in context 2; dissertation. Optional modules: sociology of sport; technology, culture and communication; race and ethnicity; sociology of risk; gender and consumer culture; international migration; health and inequality; political sociology.

Assessment methods

Courses are assessed by essay and project work. A 10,000-15,000 word dissertation is also required.
