Conservation of Historic Objects

This is a hands-on programme that enables students to develop a wide range of advanced practical conservation and restoration skills. Different types of historic materials are examined and students can choose to focus on preventive treatment, preventive conservation or collection management. The course has strong links with local, regional and national museums, professional bodies and agencies in the heritage field.

Entry requirements

Direct entry to the MA requires a minimum 2.2 Honours degree in conservation, or equivalent professional conservation experience. For those looking to enter the conservation profession from other degree courses, or from a non-conservation background, you can consider our Graduate Diploma route. International students will require English language at IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each element, or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: conservation management/professional studies; collections management; interpreting objects; negotiated theory and practice 1; research methods in conservation.

Assessment methods

The programme utilises a full range of assessment fitting to a Master's level qualification including essays, reports, practical work, seminar and poster presentation and research project / dissertation. Where a student employed in Conservation submits a project from their work, the module tutor will, where practicable, endeavour to make a visit as part of the assessment process.

Sponsorship information

All UK or EU students who hold a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from another institution will receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees when they enrol on a University of Lincoln taught Master's programme. The scholarship is offset against tuition fee payments due for each academic year of study. Please note that the Master of Architecture (Part Two) and MBA programmes are exceptions to this scheme, as other scholarships are in place for those courses.
