Historical Studies

This is a flexible programme of study, delivered in early evening teaching sessions. It allows students to deepen and extend the study of history beyond undergraduate level and develop key research skills, which are essential for a range of job opportunities. The programme introduces students to new and exciting approaches to studying the past, and helps develop a variety of skills that will enable them to undertake their own research projects.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree in history or a related subject, usually a 2.1 or higher.
International students will require English language at IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each element, or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: research methods; approaches to historical inquiry. Optional modules: break ranks! (antimilitarism, pacifism and resistance to war); early modern manhood; 19th century lives (texts, histories, portraits); print culture and the book in the 19th century; the British image of the United States (1896 to present day); the 19th century natural world; the study of political history in Britain.

Assessment methods

A variety of forms of assessment are used, including research projects, documentary critiques, essays, presentations, book reviews, portfolios and the dissertation.

Sponsorship information

All UK or EU students who hold a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from another institution will receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees when they enrol on a University of Lincoln taught Master's programme. The scholarship is offset against tuition fee payments due for each academic year of study. Please note that the Master of Architecture (Part Two) and MBA programmes are exceptions to this scheme, as other scholarships are in place for those courses.
