This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of current developments in contemporary literature as well as in literatures of the past, a sample of the diversity and variety of English studies and the skills needed to equip them for further research or future employment.

Entry requirements

A minimum 2.2 Honours degree. International students will require English language at IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in each element, or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: contemporary American fiction; English now 1 (poetry and drama); English now 2 (fiction, form, genre). Optional modules include: gothic spaces; issues in ecocriticism; literary theory in the 21st century; literature in the Thatcher years; 19th century lives (text, histories, portraits); poetry and patronage 1557-1625; romantic legacies; the 19th century woman writer; writing utopia and dystopia.

Assessment methods

Assessment involves short essays of 2500-3000 words for the core English Now modules; longer project work of 5000 words for the options; and a 15,000 word dissertation.

Sponsorship information

All UK or EU students who hold a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from another institution will receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees when they enrol on a University of Lincoln taught Master's programme. The scholarship is offset against tuition fee payments due for each academic year of study.
