Biotechnology

This programme enables students to advance their theoretical knowledge, understanding, practical experience and training in biotechnology, with a particular focus on modern molecular biology approaches. In addition to providing a thorough grounding in core theory and practice, this degree enables students to specialise in medical, industrial, environmental and fermentation biotechnology with the opportunity to complete a research project in 1 of these areas. Students are taught by research-active staff with expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, systems biology, fermentation and bio-engineering. The programme also aims to provide training and support in developing a variety of key professional skills, including critical thinking and analysis, project and time management, teamwork, report writing and science communication and dissemination.

Entry requirements

A minimum 2.2 Honours degree in a related discipline. International students will require English language at IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each element, or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules: introduction to biotechnology; molecular biotechnology; professional and research skills in biotechnology A; medical biotechnology; industrial and environmental biotechnology; fermentation biotechnology; professional and research skills in biotechnology B; independent research project within a biotechnology related discipline.

Assessment methods

Assessment is conducted through coursework including literature reviews, problems papers, oral and poster presentations (both individual and group) and ultimately the preparation of a research dissertation for the research project.

Sponsorship information

All UK or EU students who hold a 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree from another institution will receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees when they enrol on a University of Lincoln taught Master's programme. The scholarship is offset against tuition fee payments due for each academic year of study. Please note that the Master of Architecture (Part 2) and MBA programmes are exceptions to this scheme, as other scholarships are in place for those courses.
