Telecommunications and Wireless Systems

On this programme you will develop knowledge and skills in the key aspects of telecommunications and wireless systems including the latest developments. The first two sections consist of lectures, laboratory classes and seminars, with a final section devoted to individually supervised project. Core (compulsory) topics inlcude: microprocessor hardware and software technology; signal processing; cellular radio communications systems; related topics. In addition, you can choose from the following options to take account of your interests: optical fibre systems; radio propagation; communication signal processing; neural networks; integrated circuit design.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject such as electrical and electronics engineering, physics and computer science or equivalent. In some cases, a 2.2 Honours degree may be considered if strong performance in relevant, formally assessed modules is demonstrated or the applicant has relevant industrial experiences. All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, qualifications accepted include GCSE English; A-level English; language; IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5) in each component); TOEFL iBT 88 or above with minimum scores in components as follows: listening and writing 21, reading 22, speaking 23.

Course modules

Core modules: Digital system design; advanced signal processing; commmunication networks; software engineering and programming; research skills and project management; microprocessor systems; antennas; radio propagation for wireless systems; MSc project; optional modules: integrated circuits - concepts and design; plasma engineering; information theory and coding; digital filtering; Mems design and nanotechnology.
