Contemporary Human Geography (Research Methods)

This programme involves geographical thought and analysis. Students will choose either Social/Cultural Geography or Population Studies. In Social/Cultural Geography, this would involve key areas/concepts of interest to contemporary human geography. An indicative list would involve issues such as identity, political activism and resistance, experiences of migration and diaspora, alternative economic practices, and health and the lifecourse. In Population Geography, a similar list could include demographic theory, household-level analysis of population trends, analysing social segregation, and critically interpreting migration statistics.

Entry requirements

The typical entry requirement is a Bachelors degree (with Honours) at 2.1 level or better in an appropriate field of study. Individual consideration is given to mature students with significant and relevant experience and with professional qualifications; 2.1 BSc or above (or equivalent for overseas students) in Science or Mathematics.

Course modules

60 Credits of research training will be structured across 4 15-credit modules shared between the Department of Geography and Planning and Social Sciences in the University more broadly. These modules would provide training in the design, collection and analysis of research data, together with training in the philosophical and theoretical basis of research.
