Palaeoanthropology

Students study human evolution and human origins. Applicants can chose from a diverse array of subjects such as: The archaeology of early hominin sites; African archaeology; hominid palaeontology; evolutionary theory; primate evolution; science-based techniques in palaeoanthropological investigation.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant field of study. All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, qualifications accepted include GCSE English; A-level English; language; IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5) in each component); TOEFL iBT 88 or above with minimum scores in components as follows: listening and writing 21, reading 22, speaking 23.

Course modules

Core modules: Frameworks of human evolution; optional modules: research themes in the neolithic of Europe and the near east; deciphering symbols: materials, lives and agents in the European upper palaeolithic; early technologies; advanced statistics for biological research; human osteology; contemporary issues in modern human origins; cognitive evolution; human evolution; primate socioecology.

Assessment methods

These include a dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words on an aspect of human evolution.
