History (Cultural History)

Students explore artefacts and ideas, material objects and mentalities, classical music and lonely hearts columns, war memorials and Whit Walks, films and foxtrots, how young women dressed and the ideas and ideals of femininity that shaped their lives. Applicants study the specialist research methods used by cultural historians, to the ongoing historical, historiographical and theoretical debates and to related disciplines such as cultural studies, literary studies, history of art and visual culture and sociology. There are case studies from across Britain and continental Europe, the European Empires and North America from the 18th century to the present day.
