Directed Research in English
This course is designed both for students who wish to complete a year's research as preparation for PhD study and those wishing to complete a 1-year research project only; students choose their own topic (subject to the availability of supervision), and a course of study is designed in discussion with them; among the possibilities are topics in Medieval studies, 18th-century studies and 20th-century writing, and cross-period topics as well as historical linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics and the philosophy of language; directed research is undertaken mainly under individual supervision; in addition, the programme provides research training in such matters as bibliography, library use, and word-processing skills; the programme involves regular contact with a supervisor who is an expert in the student's chosen area of study; in addition, students attend seminars in research skills, and are required to present a report on a topic within their research area in the form of a seminar paper to other students and staff; the course culminates in the preparation of a 25000-word dissertation.
