Environmental Economics

The programme gives students the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the different ways in which economic decisions, market forces and government policies can affect the natural environment; a sound knowledge of the theory and techniques of non-market valuation to estimate the demand for environmental quality or the cost of environmental degradation; the ability to design and critically evaluate public policies towards the environment and natural resources; an appreciation of the usefulness of environmental economics in informing political decision-making; enhanced communication and presentation skills; the ability to access the environmental economics literature and to pursue their own research.

Entry requirements

An (Honours) degree or equivalent in appropriate subject required for MSc; graduates in other disciplines which have included appropriate subjects and suitable preliminary training for this course, and non-graduates with previous education approved by the University as degree-equivalent, are considered for Postgraduate Diploma; advanced level of ability to work in English is required, equivalent to IELTS score 7.0 or TOEFL Test of English score 600.

Course modules

Modules include: Economic principles; economics of environmental policy; environmental valuation: theory, techniques and application; natural resource economics; applied econometrics; climate change and development; environmental science and management; environmental assessment; environmental auditing and environmental management systems; ethics for environment and development; international environmental law; project planning and management; water resources management; or sustainable land management; or sustainable forest management.
