Managing Rural Development
The programme gives students the opportunity to develop a critical awareness of the social, economic and management issues underlying socioeconomic change; conceptual and analytical skills relevant to the social and economic dimensions of agriculture and related industries; a set of operational skills pertinent to working in the public, private or NGO domains; the ability to engage with, and influence, rational debates concerning the optimal direction of rural sector change; enhanced communication and presentation skills; the ability to access the rural development literature and to pursue effective research.
A degree in relevant subject, or (for Postgraduate Diploma) equivalent academic achievement/experience which included suitable preliminary training; advanced level of ability to work in English is required, equivalent to TOEFL score 600 or IELTS score 7.0.
Modules include: Economics and institutions for development; gender and social development; management in rural development; rural development; agricultural trade and policy; food security and social protection; managing knowledge and communication for development; marketing for small agribusinesses; NGO management; project planning and management; socioeconomics of rural livelihoods; understanding poverty; water resources management; rural finance; 1 module selected from another programme; research methods; dissertation.
Assessment will be examined by a two-hour unseen written paper and an Examined Assignment, worth 80% and 20% of the module mark respectively.
