Sustainable Development

This programme focuses on the global development and environmental challenges that have been articulated in the Millennium Development Goals and in other international agreements, and it explores ways of finding solutions to those challenges through the promotion of sustainable development. The programme provides a theoretical basis for the study of sustainable development and for understanding the evolution and meanings of this fiercely-contested concept.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree or equivalent in appropriate subject required for MSc; graduates in other disciplines which have included appropriate subjects and suitable preliminary training for this course, and non-graduates with previous education approved by the University as degree-equivalent, are considered for Postgraduate Diploma; advanced level of ability to work in English is required, equivalent to IELTS score 7.0 or TOEFL Test of English score 600.

Course modules

Modules include: Understanding sustainable development; environmental science and management; economics and institutions for development; ethics for environment and development; managing knowledge and communication for development; ngo management; project planning and management; management in rural development; economic principles; economics of environmental policy; environmental valuation: theory, techniques and application; natural resource economics; introduction to environmental economics and policy; environmental assessment; environmental auditing and environmental management systems; international environmental law; water resources management; sustainable land management; sustainable forest management; natural resource economics; agricultural trade and policy; understanding poverty; food security and social protection; rural development; either socioeconomics of rural livelihoods or gender and social development; research methods; dissertation.
