Finance (Economic Policy)

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of financial markets, banks, and their relation to economic performance; it provides a sound platform for advancing careers in finance and policy; because finance is so wide ranging, the degree enables students to choose between 3 majors: economic policy; financial sector management; quantitative finance.

Entry requirements

A degree with 2nd Class Honours or other acceptable qualification. All applicants must have a high level of English language ability in reading, writing and study skills equivalent to a score of 7.0 in the IELTS test, or 7 in both reading and writing; or a score of 600+ in the TOEFL paper-based test of English, with at least 5.0 in the test of written English; and in the TOEFL internet-based test, you will need a score of 100+, with 25+ in the written English test. Applicants may be asked to provide evidence of language ability as tested by the British Council or another registered body.

Course modules

Modules include: Banking and capital markets; international finance; macroeconomic policy and financial markets; microeconomic principles and policy; public financial management: revenue; the international monetary fund and economic policy. Elective modules: bank financial management; bank regulation and resolution in banking crises; corporate finance; corporate governance; derivatives; econometric principles and data analysis; econometric analysis and applications; financial econometrics; finance in the global market; modelling firms and markets; risk management: principles and applications; project appraisal; research methods; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by one three-hour unseen written examination and two assignments of 2,500 words each. The Dissertation (available as an option for MSc programmes only) is assessed by the submission of a written dissertation of not more than 10,000 words, excluding the bibliography and appendices.
