Advanced Computer Science (Software Engineering)

This course combines the themes of software engineering with data management; the former covers both an overview of existing approaches to software engineering, and 2 particular approaches at the forefront of software engineering research and practice; pattern-based and component-based software development; the latter covers the design, maintenance and query processing of both structured and unstructured databases as well as knowledge discovery and learning from data and semantic web technologies and ontologies.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in computer science; or in a joint degree with at least 50 per cent computer science content; applicants with extensive computer science industrial experience and a good Honours degree, or its overseas equivalent, may also be considered for admission; English language proficiency: IELTS 6.5 (writing 6); internet based TOEFL 100 with 24 in writing; computer based TOEFL 250 with 5 in TWE; or Cambridge proficiency grade C.

Modules include: Semi-structured data and the web; ontology engineering for the semantic web; principles of digital biology; introduction to health informatics; data engineering; it governance; foundations of machine learning; modelling and visualization of high-dimensional data; text mining; computer vision; semi-structured data and the web; data engineering; advanced database management systems; mobile systems; mobile communications; parallel programs and their performance; designing for parallelism and future multi-core computing; automated reasoning and verification; optimization for learning, planning and problem-solving; cryptography; computer and network security; software engineering overview; component-based software development; pattern-based software development; agile and test-driven development.
