Art History and Visual Studies

This programme operates a split-site PhD with the University of Art in Tehran, the premier higher education institute in Iran for the study of fine and performing arts, with separate campuses in Karaj and Tehran; the programme was founded to allow Iranian students to come to the University of Manchester, but enquiries are also welcome from students who may wish to take advantage of the opportunities that Manchester's link with the University of Art presents for comparative research on aspects of Persian and western art, architecture and archaeology; joint supervision can be offered with textiles experts in the Whitworth Art Gallery or with colleagues in middle eastern studies.

Entry requirements

Applicants require: PhD: a 1st or 2.1 Honours degree; Master's qualification in relevant subject or overseas equivalent; a MPhil: 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or overseas equivalent; where English is not 1st language IELTS 7.0; or TOEFL 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) are required.

Course modules

Research areas include: Greece; Italy (Etruscan; Roman; 1300-1700); oriental Christianity and early Islam; medieval England; stained glass; dress and textiles; gardens; architecture and cities (British, European, Islamic, post-colonial); Turkey and England; Victorians; art galleries, museums and collecting; modern Britain; surrealism; art and medicine; photography; contemporary; post-colonialism; heritage.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a thesis.
