Classics and Ancient History

This programme enables and assists the student to produce a dissertation that constitutes a genuine contribution to scholarly knowledge and understanding of the field; students acquire an excellent general knowledge of the wider field in question and high competence in relevant languages, ancient and modern, and associated skills, subject-specific and generic.

Entry requirements

Applicants require: PhD: a Pass at MA level (or overseas equivalent) relevant to proposed field of research; MPhil: a 2.1 Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in subject relevant to proposed field of research; English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based).

Course modules

Modules include: Athens under Macedonian control; Mycenaean and ancient Greek dialects; language and discourse in early Greek medical texts; the ethos theory in ancient Greek music; aspects of ancient warfare (several theses); the tribunate in the Roman republic; Caesar's gallic wars as a regional conflict; Roman sumptuary legislation; the service industry in ancient Rome; rhetoric in Ovid's metamorphoses; gender and power in imperial Latin epic; prudentius; Isidore of Seville; visigothic identity.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a research project.

Sponsorship information

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) grants are competetive and provide payment of tuition fees and a maintenance stipend for UK students, and tuition fees (and a maintenance stipend, subject to eligibility criteria) for EU students; the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures also offers a limited number of fee bursaries on a competitive basis for Master's students; details are published in Feb/Mar each year.
