Linguistics

The course aims to give students a grounding in breadth and depth in Linguistics, by exploring the central features of linguistic theory: its history, objectives, principal theoretical frameworks, methodologies, contested areas and uncontested results; students gain experience of excellence in teaching and learning at an advanced level, in an environment where they will benefit from the fact that the School is also home to world-leading research in Linguistics.

Entry requirements

An Upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or equvialent; alternative qualifications considered; English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 600/250.

Course modules

Modules include: Grammatical theory or topics in grammatical theory; phonetics and phonology 1; morphological theory; phonological theory; cognitive linguistics; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics; language endangerment and language death; child language; language contact; dissertation.

Sponsorship information

UK and EU applicants may enter the AHRC competition (internal deadline in early March each year); this is highly competitive, and applicants should discuss applying with the Programme Director as soon as possible; some awards are usually offered by the School or department; some awards are reserved for international applicants.
