Translation and Interpreting Studies

The course equips students with the knowledge and skills for a career in translation; or interpreting; or for other professions which require expertise in cross-cultural communication; with its combination of theory and practice, it provides excellent preparation for further study and research at PhD level; the translation course units are offered in all language combinations.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a relevant subject; excellent competence in English and one other language; overall IELTS score of 7.0 with 7.0 in the writing component or a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (internet-based test).

Course modules

Modules include: English-Chinese; English-French; English-German and English-Spanish; translation and interpreting studies 1 and 2 and research methods in translation and interpreting studies 1 and 2. Options include: audiovisual translation 1 (P); audiovisual translation 2 (P); simultaneous interpreting 1 (P); simultaneous interpreting 2 (P); commercial translation (P); consecutive interpreting 1 (P); consecutive interpreting 2(P); scientific and technical translation (P); literary translation 1 (P); literary translation 2 (P); cross-cultural pragmatics; the translation of religious texts; translating for international organisations (P); professional development.

Sponsorship information

UK and EU applicants may enter the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) competition (internal deadline in early March each year); this is highly competitive, and applicants should discuss applying with the programme director as soon as possible; some awards are usually offered by the School or department; some awards are reserved for international applicants.
