English Studies (Modernism and After)

This programme is designed to introduce students to the great diversity of post-1900 literature, literary criticism and cultural theory, as well as to the manifold interrelations between these areas of creative and scholarly practice and enquiry. The programme aims to produce students who have the knowledge, skills and attributes to undertake research in the diverse area of literatures and cultural theories since 1900. On completion of the programme students will be able to demonstrate a sound, historically informed knowledge of the great diversity of post-1900 literatures and cultural theories, as well as the interrelations between the two.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or its overseas equivalent, normally in a relevant subject.

Course modules

Modules include: England, identity and writing: the Empire and after, 1918-90; key issues in twentieth-century cultural criticism; telling tales: appropriating narratives; post-gay culture; Foucault; post-colonial cultures: gender, identity and community; post-colonial cultures; modernist children; contemporary Scottish and writing; the Irish and Scottish migrant imagination.
