Secondary Education (Mathematics)

The course consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers; the majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills; this practical training is underpinned by the development of participants knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments; the course prepares graduates to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, AS- and A-level; for the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status, trainees focus upon the 14-19 age range; learning takes place through a number of school and university based elements; there are 5 periods of school/college experience: Introductory primary experience (2 weeks); school experience 1 (7 weeks); school experience 2 (7 weeks); school experience 3 (7 weeks); enhancement experience (2 weeks); successful completion of this course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a strong academic record at A-level or equivalent; applicants must hold a qualification equivalent to a British 2nd Class Honours degree or higher containing 50 percent content strongly related to Mathematics such as engineering, physics or computer science; applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above (or hold equivalent qualifications); for those applicants whose 1st language is not English, IELTS 6.5 with a minimum band score of 6 in any 1 component is required; 577 in the TOEFL written test, 233 in the computerised TOEFL (including 5 in TWE), or 90 in the internet TOEFL with a minimum of 20 in each component; previous teaching experience is not required but prior experience of working with young people in schools and other settings would be advantageous; all applicants are strongly encouraged to spend some time (at least 2 days) in a secondary school or 6th form college prior to making an application.
