Secondary Education (Modern Languages, Spanish)
The course consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers; the majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills; this practical training is underpinned by the development of participants knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments; the course prepares graduates to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, AS- and A-level; for the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status, trainees focus upon the 14-19 age range; learning takes place through a number of school and university based elements; there are 5 periods of school/college experience: Introductory primary experience (2 weeks); school experience 1 (7 weeks); school experience 2 (7 weeks); school experience 3 (7 weeks); enhancement experience (2 weeks); successful completion of this course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.
Applicants require a strong academic record at A-level or equivalent; applicants must hold a qualification equivalent to a British 2nd Class Honours degree, approximately 50 percent or more of the degree content should focus on the specialist language (for those who are not native speakers of the language they are proposing to teach); applicants who are native speakers of the language they wish to teach should possess a degree equivalent to a 2nd Class Honours degree in English from a native-speaking country; or a 2nd Class UK Honours degree in any subject; applicants should also normally have a 2nd language (French, German or Spanish): knowledge of this 2nd language does not need to be advanced; all applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above (or hold equivalent qualifications); for those applicants whose 1st language is not English, IELTS 6.5 with a minimum band score of 6 in any 1 component is required; 577 in the TOEFL written test, 233 in the computerised TOEFL (including 5 in TWE), or 90 in the internet TOEFL with a minimum of 20 in each component; previous teaching experience is not required but prior experience of working with young people in schools and other settings are considered as part of the selection process; all applicants are expected to spend at least 2 days in a state secondary school prior to making an application.
