Global Urban Development and Planning

This programme provides students with an understanding of cutting edge conceptual and operational debates in global urban development theory and practice, and to equip them with specialist skills to identify sustainable urban development planning solutions in specific contexts.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline from an approved university; some work or placement experience; admission of candidates who do not meet this criterion can be approved if satisfactory evidence of postgraduate study, research or professional experience is provided; for students whose 1st language is not English: IELTS score of 7.0 overall; or TOEFL test paper-based score of 600 with minimum TWE score of 5; or a TOEFL computer-based score of 250 with minimum essay rating of 5; or TOEFL test internet based score of 100 with minimum writing score of 25; an NCUK PMP EAP grade A.

Course modules

Modules include: Urban development planning in cities of the South - an international perspective; critical issues in urban inequality; best practices in urban development planning in cities of the South; development research; optional modules planning and managing development; planning theory and ethics; civil society and public action; poverty and development, concepts, analysis and the international policy agenda; social development analysis and policy, environmental impact assessment; planning for environmental change; climate change, disasters and urban poverty; reconstruction and development; poverty,livelihoods and poverty reduction in context; water and sanitation planning in developing countries; European planning perspectives (incorporating residential field-trip for which there is an additional charge); community planning; urban transformations in contemporary China.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a dissertation.
