Political Science (Political Theory)

This programme offers an opportunity to explore some of the key political science and public policy issues of the 21st century; these include examination of the nature and problems of policy making in the contemporary world; how in a globalised world public decision making can be constructed in a way that delivers legitimacy and effective capacity to act; and the impact of governance arrangements on policy outcomes and the relationship between the state and citizens; it also involves in the modules on offer an opportunity to apply insights gleaned in a variety of contemporary settings.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 (or overseas equivalent) in a social science subject for direct Master's entry; 2.2 (or overseas equivalent) for postgraduate diploma route entry; for applicants whose 1st language is not English: IELTS overall 7, writing score 7; TOEFL overall 623, TWE 5 (PBT); TOEFL overall 263, TWE 5 (CBT) (this test is no longer available but results less than 2 years old can be submitted); TOEFL overall 100, with 25 in each of the 4 sections (IBT).

Course modules

Modules include: Understanding governance; and governance and the welfare state; advanced research in politics and dissertation research design; plus optional modules.
