Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The course is concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck; all programmes are based on the speciality of oral surgery but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery; the programme provides specialist oral surgery clinical training; students undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia; they also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery; students attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

Entry requirements

A primary dental degree and a Master's degree from a recognised institution; for students whose 1st language is not English: a minimum IELTS of 6.5 with no less than 6 in the written component; TOEFL 575 paper-based, 230 computer-based or 90 iBT; this certification must be no more than 12 months old.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by essay and SBA's throughout the programmes and related to the taught modules. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.
Research Methods component: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments
Biostatistics component: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments
Clinical component: This is assessed by written examination and clinical examination in the form of an oral presentation
