Medical Sciences

Our Medical Sciences MRes is designed to provide a grounding in medical research skills if you are a student from the medical and dental sciences. The course is taken after Year 4 of clinical training, with candidates selected from students admitted to the MBChB undergraduate courses at Manchester and the University of St Andrews. It is also open to medical students from other universities in the UK, as well as medical and dental graduates with medical research experience. You will cover practical biomedicine and research skills, and also undertake a full-time research placement.

Entry requirements

Candidates are selected from the students admitted to the MBChB undergraduate course of The University of Manchester. The minimum criterion for admission is satisfactory achievement in years 1 to 3 / 4 of the undergraduate medical programme. For University of St Andrews students, this includes their 3 year degree programme and the following one or two years spent in Manchester (years 3 and 4 of the Manchester programme).
We also accept intercalating dental students from the University of Manchester, students from other UK Universities including home medical and dental graduates and international medical graduates who can demonstrate relevant experience and commitment to biomedical research.
Most international students must demonstrate English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system. We ask for English language proof from applicants from non-majority English speaking countries.Specifically, we require a minimum of:
IELTS - minimum 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing
TOEFL: 90 internet-based (with 22 in each component)
