University of Manchester
The programme aims to produce professionally competent, reflective and analytical social work practitioners who are able to practice in a variety of settings, with a range of service users, in accordance with national occupational standards and expectations identified in the code of practice for social care workers; the programme is designed for postgraduates who wish to become registered social work practitioners and provides the flexibility for students to choose a special area of interest in the 2nd year (children and families, adults and community care or mental health); 1st year includes learning about social policy and social divisions, law and ethical conduct, the life course, communication skills and the needs of different service user groups; students undertake 100 days of practice placements; 2nd year students learn about research methods, theories of social work intervention, working across organisational boundaries, and choose a particular area of interest for in-depth learning; European computer driving licence (ECDL) is completed in this year; there is a further 100 days of practice placements.
The Government has previously provided student bursaries for pre-qualifying social work students resident in England. This bursary provides a contribution towards tuition fees, nominal living expenses and transport costs for placements. The Department of Health will set an annual cap on the number of social work bursaries to be offered in each academic year for students undertaking social work qualifying courses. The number of bursaries available may be less than the number of places available. We will provide the NHS Bursary Services Authority with a shortlist of those applicants who should be considered for a bursary.
