PhD/MPhil programmes are based on individual research projects that last 3-4 years (PhD) or 1-2 years (MPhil), working with a specific Primary Supervisor and Co-Supervisor(s). Applicants are specifically matched with a Primary Supervisor and individual project based on their research interests and background. Research areas include: Development of novel nucleic acid-based diagnostics and therapeutics. Modelling and simulation of pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions and pharmacodynamics in healthy virtual populations. Modelling and simulation of pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions and pharmacodynamics in patient populations. Analysis of inter-individual variability in drug metabolizing enzyme activity. Optimal design of early phase clinical trials with new therapies and drug combinations. Applications of systems biology approach to prediction of drug absorption, distribution and Elimination. Extrapolation of in vitro data to predict in vivo pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. Applications of PKPD in drug development and therapeutics, particularly endocrinology, drug abuse, and paediatric pharmacology.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject; suitable MSc degree considered; English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575/230.

Sponsorship information

20 to 25 full studentships (MRC,BBSRC,EPSRC) are awarded to students who qualify as Home or EU status; some projects, especially industrial collaborations (eg CASE), provide an enhanced stipend; limited bursaries are also available to overseas postgraduates from outside the EU.
