Genetics

This course seeks to understand how biological information is replicated, transmitted or altered and the overall effects on phenotypes, populations and evolution; genetics research uses modern technologies, equipment and approaches to study prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems; areas of study include: Molecular mechanisms controlling gene expression; genetic disorders; developmental genetics; genome organisation; chromosome structure; organisation and reproduction; cell cycle control; behavioural genetics; population and quantitative biology; ecological and evolutionary genetics; and mathematical models and statistical analysis of inheritance and evolution.

Entry requirements

A 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a relevant subject; Lower 2nd Class Honours degree supplemented by appropriate relevant experience may be acceptable; IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 577 (paper based), TOEFL 233 (computer based) or TOEFL 90 (internet based) required.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a research project.

A large number of funded PhD places are offered annually via the UK Research Councils; other studentships may be available through charities, internal funds and some industry- sponsored awards.
