Neuroscience

PhD/MPhil programmes are based on individual research projects that last 3-4 years (PhD) or 1-2 years (MPhil), working with a specific Primary Supervisor and Co-Supervisor(s). Applicants are specifically matched with a Primary Supervisor and individual project based on their research interests and background. Research and postgraduate study can focus on: Establishment of animal models for psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); combining behaviour with in vivo electrophysiology in awake and anaesthetized rats and post-mortem brain analysis of biomarkers; developing a maternal immune activation model to complement our well established pharmacological model for schizophrenia; for ADHD, we are developing a novel animal model whereby rats are separated into high and low attentive and impulsive groups. We are also interested in taking this approach to patient stratification; assessing efficacy of novel treatments for cognition and negative symptoms in schizophrenia including drug and exercise therapy; schizophrenia patients where we are interested in the beneficial effects of cognitive remediation and social skills training. working with preclinical models for Alzheimer¿s disease (AD). One focus is around the administration of different types of amyloid beta (Aß) oligomers into the brain to induce cognitive deficits; the underlying biological mechanisms that may lead to the cognitive deficits observed in these models. We are currently developing a novel inducible model for sporadic AD to study the link between amyloid and inflammation in the early stages of the disease. These studies will help with the identification of new therapeutic targets and provide a platform for assessing the efficacy of novel therapies.
