University of Northampton

This course is offered full or part time over 1 or 2 years respectively and provides a qualification for recent UK Engineering graduates and equivalently qualified international students. It assumes that applicants will have a broad engineering background, which it then builds on. The programme is divided into 3 stages to complete the Master's level qualification, students must complete 6, 20 credit modules and an individual engineering project worth 60 credits. During the course students complete 4 core modules and choose 2 optional modules. Theoretical lectures and seminars are reinforced by engineering examples and case studies and using computer simulation tools and laboratory facilities.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a recognised 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or international equivalent in a relevant subject area. It is assumed that students will have a knowledge of engineering from almost any discipline (e.g. mechanical, electrical, manufacturing) and are interested in developing their engineering skills in the area of modelling, control and sustainability. Those who do not have English as their 1st language will need to demonstrate that they meet the minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent). If an applicant does not meet standard entry requirements, it is possible to undertake a single module and upon successful completion of this module progress to the full MSc qualification.

Course modules

Core modules: advanced control technology; computer aided analysis and visualisation of mechanical systems; condition monitoring; individual engineering project; mathematical modelling; professional practice for technologists; system dynamics and vibrations.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework, oral presentations, group work, practical reports, critical reviews and all students undertake a substantial individual research project. Learning methods will be varied and include seminar and case study discussions, lectures and practical sessions.
