Youth and Community Work

The main employers of youth workers are no longer dedicated local authority youth services but multi agency teams, voluntary sector initiatives, social enterprises and a vast array of other organisations, sectors and settings that value youth work skills. The course is designed to meet the needs of these new and emerging delivery arrangements; the course meets an anticipated demand from existing youth work practitioners in the travel to Northampton region for higher academic qualifications plus evident demand from recent undergraduates in associated disciplines for the opportunity to gain the nationally recognised Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) professional qualification in youth and community work. The taught programme delivery element is designed to take place on 1 single day per week in order that post graduate students have opportunity to either continue in their current related employment or access applied practice opportunities.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally have an Honours degree with a 1st or upper 2nd classification in an appropriate subject. Applicants should have prior experience in youth and community work before starting the course.

Course modules

Modules include: fieldwork (principle and alternative placements); youth work principles and practice; youth empowerment, social action and research methods; social entrepreneurship in practice; young people and offending; work based synthesis.

Assessment methods

Assessment is 100 per cent coursework. Module assessments require field work, research and practical application. Central to the learning strategy is the theme of students taking a high degree of responsibility for their own learning. Accordingly, the course seeks to create an interactive learning environment characterised by the sharing of ideas, negotiation and debate.
