Students registered for the MPhil may transfer to the PhD if their work is judged to be of suitable quality and promise. Research interests include: archaeobotany; human use of plants in the ancient Mediterranean; the importation of exotic plant species in Roman and Medieval Europe; zooarchaeology; human-animal relations and food ways across human history; the cultural significance of animals; hunting; the archaeology of sustainability; archaeomaterials; the scientific analysis of glass from prehistory to post-Medieval; ethnoarchaeology; anthropology; prehistoric technology; archaeology of Western Asia, with a particular focus on Iran and the Persian Gulf; Prehistoric Italy; early metallurgy; Mediterranean prehistory; Aegean Bronze Age; Greek Dark Age; later prehistory of Europe; Atlantic communities in the 1st millennium BC; underwater archaeology; submerged settlements; new methods of underwater recording; Roman archaeology of the Mediterranean, Balkans and Britain and the north-west provinces; epigraphy; Roman urbanism; the archaeology of Late Antiquity; Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian) landscapes and settlement in Britain and North West Europe; maritime and coastal communities; material culture and social identity; Medieval and post-Medieval standing buildings archaeology; historical archaeology; urban landscapes and households.

Entry requirements

Master's qualification; other qualifications are considered; applicants whose 1st language is not English require (within the last 2 years): IELTS score of at least 7.0 with no less than 6.0 in each element, or a TOEFL score of 600 (250 for computer based tests) with a TWE of at least 5.0, or a TOEFL iBT score of 100 (with no less than 21 in any element).
