The curriculum comprises an intensive language course for absolute beginners; the diploma focuses on acquisition of grammar and vocabulary, and on reading, comprehension and oral skills to enable students to pursue research in their chosen area; there is an assessment to test competence in these skills, including course work, written assessments and an oral examination; for their oral examinations students asked to make a presentation in their arget language in relation to their proposed research project for those continuing to full-time research, or on a topic to be agreed with the diploma convenor for those pursuing the diploma only; this ab-initio course is aimed at students intending to undertake doctoral research in Slavonic and East European studies (literature, history, politics, etc.) and at those intending to pursue a language-related career as an interpreter or translator.

Entry requirements

Candidates would normally be expected to hold a single or joint Honours degree at 2.1 level or above (or its international equivalent) in an appropriate subject; IELTS:7.0 with no less than 6.0 in any element; TOEFL IBT: 100 with no less than 21 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in speaking and 21 in writing.
