The curriculum comprises an intensive language course for absolute beginners; the diploma focuses on acquisition of grammar and vocabulary, and on reading, comprehension and oral skills to enable students to pursue research in their chosen area; contact hours are between 10 and 12 per week (depending on numbers) and students are expected to attend all contact hours; there is assessment to test competence in these skills, including course work, written assessments and an oral examination; for the oral examination students are asked to make a presentation in their target language in relation to their proposed research project for those continuing to full-time research, or on a topic to be agreed with the diploma convenor for those pursuing the diploma only; this ab-initio course is aimed at students intending to undertake doctoral research in Slavonic and East European studies (literature, history, politics, etc.) and for those intending to pursue a language-related career as an interpreter or translator.
Candidates would normally be expected to hold a single or joint Honours degree at 2.1 level or above (or its international equivalent) in an appropriate subject; IELTS:7.0 with no less than 6.0 in any element; TOEFL IBT:100 (no less than 19 in any element).
