Portuguese and Lusophone Studies

Students select a topic, in consultation with a prospective supervisor, and over the course of a years full-time registration they gather materials, read reference works they have located themselves or which have been recommended to them by their supervisor, hone their thoughts and their focus, and in the end produce a thesis of about 30000 words in length; they can write in English, Spanish or Portuguese; in the initial stages the supervisor sends the student a series of Graduate School research preparation courses; throughout the year, he/she helps the student to develop those research skills appropriate to their discipline and type of investigation; students are expected to attend all departmental research seminars and special lectures, to broaden their horizons; they are also asked to contribute to the end-of-year Postgraduate Forum with a mini-presentation of their own.
